Position Information

“From Plans to Reality—Make Every Detail Count.”

The Department of Design & Construction, Civil Division located in Honolulu, is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector. This position is to provide independent daily oversight and inspection of the City’s Capital Improvement projects including, but not limited to, roadways, bridges, drainage, flood control, rockfall mitigation, guardrails, and ADA improvements, in accordance with the contract documents, plans, Standard Details and Specifications, General Terms and Conditions, as well as established policies and procedures.


What You'll Do
  • Provide independent oversight and inspection of complex, multi-discipline construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, permits, safety, and traffic control requirements.
  • Perform field assessments, measurements, and quantity calculations; maintain accurate daily reports, project records, and documentation to support progress payments.
  • Coordinate with contractors, utility companies, and agencies; identify field issues, clarify plans/specifications, and escalate conflicts or discrepancies as needed.
  • Conduct material sampling and testing, enforce safety and permit compliance, and provide guidance and oversight to subordinate inspectors.

**$6,495 per month (SR-21) salary includes $1,157 shortage differential**

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.  

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of experience in inspecting or supervising construction work.

Substitution:
  1. An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from a regionally-accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic program from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
  2. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for all three (3) years of the required experience.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
