Description


The Chief of Police is an exempt position appointed by the Mayor with the approval of a majority of the Village Board of Trustees. The Chief reports to the Village Administrator and works closely with Village staff to prevent and suppress crime, protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and preserve the peace. 


The Chief of Police is the chief executive officer of the department and the final departmental authority on all matters of policy, operations, and discipline. The Chief is responsible for planning, budgeting, staffing, directing, coordinating, and controlling all department functions and activities; maintaining safe working conditions and overseeing compliance with the Village's safety procedures and policies; ensuring the continued efficient and effective operation of the department; and maintaining positive relations with the citizens of Mundelein, the Village government, and other agencies. 


Examples of Work

  • Direct the administration and operations of the department in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Establish, in written form for all employees, policies, procedures, rules and regulations and directions for the administration and operation of the department.
  • Discipline employees in accordance with Village ordinances and work rules for breaches of department policies, procedures, rules and regulations and directions with measures within his authority, including suspension or filing of charges with the Police and Fire Commission.
  • Serve as the appointing authority for appointment to Police and Fire Commission exempt positions within the department other than his own.
  • Oversee the fiscal management of budgetary resources.
  • Review offense reports, arrest reports, accident reports and case reports prepared by Mundelein Police Department officers.
  • Prepare reports for Mayor and Village Board on Mundelein Police Department activity.
  • Prepare traffic surveys or other reports as directed by the Mayor, Village Board or Village Administrator making recommendations as needed.
  • Provide information to the media about department activities, investigations and projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a police-related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ten years of progressive law enforcement experience, including at least five years in a supervisory capacity in a comparably sized department.
  • Relevant specialized police training may substitute for education.
  • Thorough knowledge of police administration, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong administrative and communication skills and a high level of professional standards.

Compensation Package


The Police Chief position has an annual salary range of $188,656 to $205,032, and the Village expects to start the selected individual at the starting salary. The Village of Mundelein also offers an attractive benefits package including:
